SAN DIEGO--(PowerGenix, the leading manufacturer of high performance, rechargeable Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) batteries, today announced it has signed a licensing and product development agreement with global energy storage leader EnerSys.)--
“As a company with over 100 years of market leadership, EnerSys is an ideal partner to develop and expand the adoption of NiZn batteries”
After extensive testing and validation of NiZn batteries, EnerSys (NYSE:ENS) has selected PowerGenix technology for inclusion into its product line and global sales channels. Under the agreement, EnerSys will develop, manufacture, and market large format, nickel-based solutions for industrial applications including reserve power, rail, defense, and aerospace. Before entering the partnership, EnerSys spent almost a year subjecting PowerGenix’s technology to deep technical scrutiny.
“As a company with over 100 years of market leadership, EnerSys is an ideal partner to develop and expand the adoption of NiZn batteries,” said Dan Squiller, CEO of PowerGenix. “This is a great example of a complimentary relationship: we bring to the partnership an innovative technology, and EnerSys brings proven manufacturing, inventive product design and a top global sales organization. Together, we have committed to an aggressive timeline to meet the demands of the market in the near term.”
EnerSys is the largest industrial battery manufacturer in the world with manufacturing and assembly facilities worldwide to serve customers in over 100 countries. The company, which saw record quarterly earnings in Q4 2011 based partly on new partnerships, focuses on three primary markets: aerospace & defense, reserve power and motive power. The partnership with PowerGenix will capitalize on EnerSys’ legacy of global success with nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries enabling EnerSys to offer customers a high-performance, safe, environmentally friendly alternative for many of the same applications previously served by Ni-Cd.
“NiZn batteries, which are ideally suited for a number of our customers worldwide, tremendously strengthen our energy storage portfolio. We will work closely with our customers to introduce a family of NiZn batteries into a range of high value applications,” said Ray Kubis, president of EnerSys Europe. “PowerGenix technology combined with our own nickel-based product application and production experience provides a unique platform for our customers to benefit from this technology.”
PowerGenix has developed and patented a high-power and low-cost Nickel-Zinc battery for hybrid electric vehicles, industrial products, and stationary storage applications. PowerGenix Nickel-Zinc batteries outperform lead-acid and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries in a smaller and lighter form-factor, and avoid the high cost and safety issues associated with lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries – providing a highly recyclable, lead-free alternative to existing technologies in the multi-billion dollar rechargeable battery market.
